THE FAVELA: rocinha, rio de janeiro

As a part of BUDS 2015 (Brazilian Urban Design Study 2015) we visited Rocinha in Rio de Janeiro, the largest favela in Brazil.

Observing parts of daily life in the favela and discussions with our resident-tour guide emphasised a strong community that thrives on local exchange and support to one another. Much of this can be attributed to principles of urban design, illustrated here through my photography. These principles are evident within streets, public space, private spacehousing and mixed-use development.
